Bookworm Beat 3/30/17 — tight-knit communities, nuclear families, and individual worth

I learned that, before government welfare, America was not a cold, cruel place in which widows and orphans routinely died. Instead, America had a vast network of fraternal organizations that functioned as welfare organizations. As with the Mormon wards, these “welfare” agencies worked extremely well because they took place at the community level.

I would add that ‘providing’ welfare is NOT a Constitutional function of the Federal government. This includes things like so-called Social Security, which is nothing more than a welfare scam.

Justice and “Social Justice” Are Two Very Different Things | Mises Wire

Americans cannot have both liberty and this type of social justice — under whose aegis one can assert rights to be provided education and health care, not to mention food, housing, etc. Positive rights to receive such things, absent an obligation to earn them, must violate others’ liberty, because a government must take citizens’ resources without their consent to fund them. Providing such government benefits for some forcibly violates others’ rights to themselves and their property.

Today’s Sermon: Whose Compassion?  |  Ricochet

It’s embarrassing to admit this, but I had never thought that much about my rights as an American. I didn’t think of what it would actually mean if a government guaranteed a right to decent housing enshrined in the Bill of Rights. It’s not that it’s all that complicated … I just hadn’t thought about it.

Let’s ignore the problem of defining “decent housing” and declare that a “decent” house means four walls and a roof to keep out the rain … a heating system and a flush toilet.

Someone has to build the house. Any carpenters here? Someone has to install the heating system and the plumbing — anyone here know how to do that? Okay, so does my government-secured right to decent housing mean that carpenter, or roofer, or the plumber, and the furnace guy have to build me a house whether they want to or not? Do I have the right to their labor and materials? Will the government force them to do it?

AWD’S COMMON SENSE WELFARE REFORM PLAN – Angry White Dude

Know when George W Bush lost me? When he said illegal aliens “are doing jobs Americans won’t do” as he tried to pass amnesty during his second term. Nothing is further from the truth. Illegals are doing work Americans don’t HAVE to do! Lazy mooching Americans are content to sit back and let the dwindling number of producers pay for their food, housing, health care, cell phones, [Read More…]
